Flexible Learning for Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses:

  • access to online courses and facilitator from registration until March 31st, 2012
  • facilitators are not available during July and August
  • work at your own pace, no time restrictions or order for study
  • choose any number of specific modules or a full course (discounted rate)

These Continuing Education courses are for nurse practitioners, registered nurses practicing in an expanded role and nurses who require advanced knowledge due to working with specific populations. These courses will assist nurses to:

  • significantly increase the knowledge and confidence of nurses practicing in expanded roles;
  • establish and strengthen the network of contacts;
  • support recruitment and retention by enabling nurses to access continuing education in their own communities;
  • improve the health outcomes of their clients;
  • fulfill reflective practice or quality assurance requirements defined by provincial nursing regulating bodies.

Pharmacotherapeutics
4.jpg Pharmacotherapeutics course has been designed for NPs and RNs as an overview of the concepts related to developing optimal management plans for clients presenting with a variety of acute and chronic conditions across the life span. Content focuses on common drugs used to treat particular client conditions, their effects, side effects, interactions along with non-pharmacological interventions that may improve client conditions and quality of life.Read More.

Promoting Health in Chronic Illness
4.jpg Promoting Health in Chronic Illness is developed for nurses providing primary health care to individuals living with chronic conditions. This course may be of particular interest to nurses practicing in a variety of primary health care settings (Family Health Teams, Community Health Centers, and Outpatient Clinics) who provide care to adults living with chronic health conditions. Care of the Older Adult

This course is designed for nurse practitioners who wish to review and fine tune their knowledge-base and skills specific to older adult health. Rural and Remote Health
3.jpg This course is designed to help NPs and RNs provide assessment, identify need for consultation, and formulate appropriate management plans for clients presenting with urgent or emergent health issues with a focus on rural and remote settings. The roles which NPs and RNs function in (in Ontario and across Canada), are governed by the settings in which they practice (urban vs. rural or remote), registration status, or functions outlined by delegation or medical directives. The Fundamentals of Primary Health Care
1.jpg This course is intended to provide learners with a mechanism to review the basic knowledge and skills required by a registered nurse providing primary health care to individuals, families and communities. The content presented is based on the core content delivered by the COUPN Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program and will support  a basic review of the NP-Family-All ages knowledge base, Nurses who may benefit from this course include NPs, or RNs working in family practice clinics, rural or remote settings. Mental Health in Primary Health Care
1.jpg The prevalence of mental health issues is rapidly growing and greater than one in five Canadians will experience mental illness. NPs and RNs are first line care providers who are in a position to positively affect outcomes in clients presenting with mental health concerns. This course will assist NPs and RNs to skillfully assess clients presenting with complex psychosocial and/or mental health problems, arrive at preliminary diagnoses and diagnostic formulation with plan of care, and monitor response to therapeutic interventions. Dr. Dalziel offers a 90 minute presentation developed for the COUPN NP program which focuses on how dementia is evaluated and diagnosed along with selected treatments. Dr. Dalziel also presents information related to assessment of safety to drive in relation to the diagnoses mild cognitive impairment and dementia. See Presentation

Advancing Male Health in Ottawa Part 1

3.jpg Dr. Anthony Bella, Surgeon-Investigator and Director of Basic Urologic Research, Division of Urology at The Ottawa Hospital, is interested in the role of the Nurse Practitioner in advancing male health in Ottawa. He is interested in exploring the impact of educational sessions on NP practice. The results of this education series and follow up impact analysis will be presented this June at the national meeting of the Canadian Urology Association. He has prepared 3 sessions which are made available here for easy access by NPs whether or not you have attended the on-site sessions.
